A BREATH AWAY

1034 Upper Serangoon Rd, Singapore 534797

A Breath Away is my Final Year Project in Temasek Polytechnic. For this brief, we had to look at the adaptive reuse of existing, underutilised sites and change it into one that looked into life post-pandemic. Hence, the project aims to unite youth and elderly that have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This community centric space serves to create a restful space that enables even passers-by to slow down and recharge even in the fast-paced urban landscape surroundings of the site.

The project was completed using 3DSMax, Vray and Photoshop, and was awarded the Singapore Interior Design Awards (SIDA) 2023 Best in Public Space Design Youth Category Bronze award, and the DP Project Prize Award in 2023.

  CONCEPT: "A Breathing Space"

Creating pockets of fresh air via communal spaces along a meandering path, thus creating opportunities to slow down and pause. The pace of the programmes within the site were determined with special consideration of the pace of surrounding spaces and how it can synergise with core activities for a natural “breathing space” that encourages interactions, while slowing passers-by down to create a restful space where they can live in the moment freely

Utilising the existing design elements in the original building (like breezeblocks) and translating the idea into different grid patterning and scale throughout the building’s new facades. The new louvres and breezeblocks offer more flexibility while maintaining both ventilation and sunlight, thus preserving the existing parts of the building while adapting to better fit the current environment.
